Axarquia region in Andalucia
Perfect area for fantastic walks. Starting point: Canillas de Albaida and Cómpeta. The area known as the Axarquia lies in Andalucia, an autonomous region of Spain. It stretches just east of Malaga to the border of the province of Granada just beyond Nerja. The coastline is known as the Costa del Sol, and the sea forms the border on the south and offers beaches, idyllic coves and spectacular cliffs. Inland fertile plains, hillsides with olive, orange and almond groves and in more recent times avocado and mango plantations give way to mountain ranges with some significant peaks. To the north the sierras Tejada, Almijara and Alhama are the main ranges, which are accessible from points all along the coast. The climate in Andalucia, Spain offers good walking conditions from late September to end of May but remember that temperatures are much higher here so take plenty of water, sunscreens and suitable headgear. Again take heed of weather warnings in the winter months as conditions can change quickly. Over recent years heavy rainfall has had an impact on the state of many paths.
